Wednesday 12th November: Uluru to Kings Canyon

Another long drive today. About 310km drive from where we stayed near Uluru to Kings Canyon. We got there around lunchtime (although we couldn’t get into our room till 2) and it was already 41 degrees.
We decided it was too hot to do to the base walk, so had a chill out afternoon (I risked sitting on the shaded verandah and nearly melted). We went and watched the sunset reflecting onto the range of which Kings Canyon is a part before tea.

P.S. This is a day late because we had no access to internet at KC.

Tuesday 11th November: Uluru and Kata Tjuta

An early start this morning (up at 4.30) to get out to view sunrise at Uluru. It was fantastic seeing the rock ‘come to life’ as the sun rose.
After this we took a walk to the base of the rock, which was really pretty amazing (touching this sacred rock was quite something).
We then drove about 50km across to the less-known enormous rocks at Kata Tjutu (another Aboriginal sacred site, also known as the Olgas), stopping first at a viewing platform on the red dunes.
The heat was already well into the 30s when we set off for a walk into Walpa Gorge, but it was well worth the trek.
We’ve spent the afternoon chilling back at the resort.
We plan to go and see sunset at Uluru again later.

Monday 10th November: Road trip – Alice Springs to Uluru

A good chunk of today was taken up with a 440 km road trip. The roads were one lane in each direction and it was a case of ‘follow that highway, turn off after the roadhouse and follow the next highway until you see the signs for Yulara (the ‘resort’ just outside the Uluru/Ayers Rock National Park)’.
Given the nature of the relatively barren landscape and lack of people, settlements or anything else, points of excitement included looking out for birds of prey hovering over the landscape, plus noting road signs for ‘floodway’, looking out for rare side turns and spotting the odd car or coach going the opposite way…
We went out to watch the sunset at Uluru earlier, which was fantastic.
